Otatea acuminata aztecorum (Mexican Weeping
Bamboo) showing new shoot. This is a very unusual bamboo, as
the culm's are solid throughout. Otatea, is native to Mexico
and Honduras, sympodial (new rhizome growth at the side), three
branches per node at first, growing more later. With extremely
narrow leaves, the entire foliage masses bend nearly to the ground
by it's own weight. A much sought after bamboo here in South
Texas, as it is fairly drought resistant once established. Hardy
to about 20°F
(-3°C).
